About Us

A case for the establishment of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Bayero University Kano (BUK) was made by Professor Muhammad Kabir of the Department of Community Medicine during the 17th Inaugural lecture of the University on 16th September, 2015. The construction of the new Faculty of Veterinary Medicine became a reality through an intervention fund sourced by Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo. The Senate of BUK gave approval-in-principle on 24th April, 2019. The Committee for the Establishment of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in BUK was setup by the BUK Management on 30th September, 2019 and inaugurated on 14th November, 2019. The Committee concluded its assignment on Friday 14th February, 2020.

The Faculty commenced with three (3) Departments (Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry, and Veterinary Pathobiology) as well as a Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Efforts are currently made to seek approval from the Kano State Government for the shared use of Kundila Veterinary Hospital as temporary Veterinary Teaching Hospital by BUK. The Veterinary Pathobiology Department will separate into four (4) fully edged Departments (Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Parasitology and Entomology, and Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine) within three years from take-off. Also, the Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology will come on board within the same time frame.

Staff of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and those on temporary deployment will teach clinical courses in the departments of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, and Theriogenology and Animal Production before their establishment. The Faculty sailed through the recent National Universities Commission Resource Verication conducted on 14th December, 2020 and shall commence admission during the 2022/2023 session.

" Welcome to Bayero University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. I am honoured to serve as the acting dean of the Faculty and to lead efforts toward realizing its vision and mission. The Faculty is the youngest in the University and the entire nation. Its establishment is a step towards addressing the missing link in biomedical and animal health research and teaching in the University. Our location is our greatest strength, in that Kano, being the centre of commerce and the most populous in the country, provides myriad of opportunities for investment in commercial livestock production. With this teeming population, the impact of any outbreak of animal diseases, zoonotic or otherwise, will be devastating. Hence, the need for a Faculty with a strong prole in veterinary service delivery, food security and public health.

The Faculty is strategically placed to render the triple function of teaching, research and community service. Our unique focal areas are Equine and Laboratory Animal Medicine and Welfare, Basic Toxinology and Zoonoses. This is without prejudice to other important areas that we may engage in from time-to-time.    Our curriculum is structured in such a way that it aims at possible solutions to the ever-increasing challenges of veterinary practice in the 21st century and beyond. In this regard, we have introduced new courses like Camelid Medicine, Fish and Reptilian Anatomy, Aquatic Parasitology, Fish Medicine, Environmental Health, and Veterinary Extension.  This will produce academic competence in our graduates and broaden their clinical skills.

As we prepare to admit our pioneer students in due course, it is our resolve to inculcate in them resourcefulness, creativity, knowledge and performance. We look forward to expression of your interest in our Faculty and wholeheartedly invite you to visit or contact us for more information. "
